1THE9 are finally back with their first comeback in eight months. On 16 July 2020, the group released their song ‘Bad Guy’, along with their 3rd mini-album – ‘Turn Over’. The group has expressed both their nervousness and excitement about being back on stage after a long time. Their contract is ending soon, which means ultimately it will be an end to their 1THE9 project.
The survival show – ‘Under 19‘, never got enough reception to have enough promotional material for 1THE9 and yet you can feel their potential with ‘Bad Guy’. It’s almost bittersweet that this song could be their final comeback as their vocals, rap, and dance are all on point. The song’s strong synth and fast tempo percussion are a great base for the emotional melody they have going on. The song keeps your attention, accompanied by an impressive choreography during the chorus and the bridge.
While the song’s concept is undoubtedly overused, they make it their own without having to rely on fully dark themes. The visuals are bright and the lyrics express concern towards their love interest, trying to get them to rely on you rather than keep all the burden to themselves: “You are destroying yourself / How come I’m hurting even more / Please turn around / Please look at me let me know.” The vocal effects seem unnecessary but at the same time, it shows how capable their vocalists are in hitting stable high notes.
