If you believe in ghosts, ever wondered why they are always wandering at random places. What if they had a place to stay, like all wandering souls at one place. That is what hotel del luna is. A dead person’s soul which wanders because of its unfulfilled desires stays at the del luna. Then is this a horror show? No. It is an innovative take on the afterlife which unfolds in a humorous and dramatic way. The drama features IU and Yeo Jin Goo as lead actors.
Hotel Del Luna: The Hotel of the Ghosts
The house of the moon is where the wandering souls live. The purpose of the hotel is to not let the souls wander (and bother humans). The souls can stay at the hotel as long as they want until they feel at peace and ready to live for the afterlife. The hotel is luxurious. It is big, has a bar, an amusement park, a beach, a sky lounge and much more.
The hotel also has a transport service to the samdo river bridge (The bridge between this life and the afterlife that you have to walk). However, the transport vehicle varies from a special limousine to a simple bus, depending on your good deeds. All of the hotel’s employees are ghosts as well except the manager who has to be a human. The oldest employee of the hotel is 500 years old.
Why is Jang Man Wol tied to Hotel Del Luna?
The hotel’s owner Jang Man Wol(IU) is a 1300-years-old ghost who is neither alive nor dead. Time has stopped for her. As a punishment for her grievous sins, she was tied to the moon tree many years ago. The moon tree always follows its owner and so does the guest house of the moon. Jang Man Wol cannot run away from the hotel, wherever she goes, the tree and the hotel will follow her.
How can the gods and destiny be so cruel to her, one might think. Someone had said that God is fair. The mago goddess who has tied Man Wol to the tree proves it right. Man Wol could’ve perished forever as an evil ghost to never be born again, had she not been punished. The punishment is her chance to revive herself. Now, it is time for Man Wol to leave this world, but it is not going to be easy. Koo Chan Sung(Yeo Jin Goo), the 99th human manager of the hotel comes to shake up the monotonous world of manwol.
Koo Chan Sung: The 99th Human Manager of Hotel Del Luna
When a poor and single father enters the hotel accidentally, he tries to steal antiques that are dear to Jang Man Wol. When Man Wol finds out about it, she threatens to kill him. The father pleads her not to and they crack a deal, so the father is free to walk away. The father sells his young son to Man Wol as a to-be human manager after 20 years.
Fast forward 20 years, Chan Sung is back in South Korea leaving behind his successful career as a hotelier in the USA to start a new one, to keep his father’s promise. Chan Sung had no idea of any deal that his father had made that one day a woman will come searching for him. She comes and grants him the power to see the ghosts. He’s baffled and tries to run away, but destiny doesn’t leave his back. Scared Chan Sung is forced to work at the hotel.
What is the relationship between Jang Man Wol and Koo Chan Sung?
While Man Wol practically bullied Chan Sung to work at the hotel, neither she nor Chan Sung has any idea of the role he is going to play in her life. He is going to free her from the chain of life. From the day Chan Sung starts working at the hotel, he starts dreaming of Man Wol and her past life (logically, the same life).
When he tells Man Wol about the same, she starts looking out if he’s her past lover who reincarnated as Chan Sung. She detests her past lover a lot and holds a deep grudge that she could kill Chan Sung if he was the one. The plot will keep you hanging on the same conflict for a long. Irrespective of this condition, both start liking each other. Chan Sung is ready to go all the way to give self-destructive Man Wol a peaceful final goodbye from this life.
Hotel Del Luna ending explained
As expected, every ghost in the hotel is supposed to leave one day, even the employees and owner of the hotel. When all the grudges and resentments of Man Wol and of other longest-staying employees are dissolved, they are ready to go to the afterlife. Chan Sung has lived with them like a family. He courageously sees them off to the afterlife, especially Man Wol whom he loved so much.
After everyone leaves, Chan Sung is seen reading the book, “Time and Existence”. He sits in a park imagining all his favorite ghost friends being born again and living a happy life, one that they didn’t get to live in the past. He also imagines Man Wol coming back to him. Clearly, this has left a deep mark on Chan Sung’s life and he has embraced it, instead of grieving over it.
The concept of the show is innovative and intriguing. It gives off a subtle message of living life without any feelings of negative notion, like the ghosts who lived for 500 and 1000 years with it. Life may bring moments of shame, grief, and pity to you, but you must learn to let go of them than cling onto them. Chan Sung could’ve held Man Wol back but he let her go because he knew it was the only realistic thing to do and accepted it.
