“Hospital Playlist”, a playlist worth streaming.
Hospital Playlist (Korean: 슬기로운 의사생활; lit. Wise Doctor Life) is a tvN K-Drama written by Lee Woo Jung and directed by Shin Won Ho. It is the second installment of the Wise Life series, following Prison Playbook (2017–18). It stars Jo Jung Suk, Yoo Yeon Seok, Jung Kyung Ho, Kim Dae Myung, and Jeon Mi Do. The first season aired it’s the last episode on May 28 A second season has already been announced and it might release in 2022. So yes we’re late with the review of this one but I had to write one and here it is.
Hospital Playlist tells the story of doctors and nurses working at Yulje Medical Center. It focuses on five doctors who have been friends since they entered medical school in 1999.
Cast Breakdown :
The 5 main lead formula which we rarely see in K-dramas, with each main lead showing a different medical specialization, personality, approach towards life and how all of them are still together as friends and also bandmates, showcasing a new song almost every episode thus making the English title – ‘Hospital Playlist‘ very suitable for the drama. The cast breakdown will get too long if we try to explain every character in detail, as even the supporting characters have a back story and character growth.
Jo Jung Suk starring as Lee Ik Jun, a genius in general surgery, cheerful senior, and an amazing father. The guy who makes you laugh and smile, again and again, the one who holds everyone together.
Yoo Yoon Seok starring as Ahn Jung Won is the softest of them all. He is kind and affectionate. Jung Won is a pediatrics surgeon who is pretty rare so he is an important specialist to have onboard and his empathy towards the patients makes him one of the best doctors in the series. He looks the best when he is around kids and his struggle throughout the drama regarding certain choices he needs to make, is worth watching.
Jeon Mi Do as Chae Song Hwa is a neurosurgeon and one of the best. She is not only a good doctor but a really good mentor and colleague. Her performance leaves an impact on you as her acting feels like she ain’t acting but it’s Dr. Song Hwa in reality.
Jung Kyung Ho as Kim Joon Wan played a strict yet kind doctor who specialises as a cardiac surgeon and he is the one you’ll see in the operation theatre the most. His performance wasn’t bad at all but personally out of the five friends his character’s story wasn’t much to look for.
Kim Dae Myung As Yang Seok Hyung, A divorcee gynecologist who is the best at his job. He is nice and is the one who wants them all together the most, what annoys the most about his character is he looks like he doesn’t want to move forward with his life which one would feel like to change while watching the drama. But overall, his acting is very convincing and shows him in a different light compared to his previous performances.
Now that we’ve covered the main leads some second lead roles and supporting characters you can’t ignore and have done an amazing job. The most amazing out of them all is one and only Shin Hyun Bin, starring as Jang Gyeo Wool, her acting is very smooth that it’s overwhelming to watch. Her sweet crush on Dr. Jung Won is seriously adorable. The twins are yet another pair who don’t have much of a job throughout the series but you just melt when you look at them. Kwak Sun Yong as Lee Ik Sun, Ik Joon’s younger sister has a dynamic role. Kim Jun Han as Ahn Chi Hong and its character development is worth looking for. You can see his character developing throughout the series and it’s amazing to see how well the character ages.
The old friends, that’ll be Jung Won’s mother, Rosa (Kim Hae Sook) and Director Jong Soo (Kim Kap Soo) are an adorable pair of friends and you end up wanting them to date. A favorite addition to the drama would be Sung Dong ill as Jung Won’s elder brother. His acting and characters are something I’ve always looked forward to and he never disappoints.
Final Breakdown :
The drama is a slice of life, unlike other medical K-dramas where every episode is about something big about to happen and showcasing some impossible surgery taking place as there’s a genius superhero like a doctor at present, this K-drama is as realistic as it can get at a hospital. The writers of the plot have taken a realistic approach, adding wholesome content. The K-drama tries to breakdown every character giving them a purpose of their own rather than making their sole purpose to make lead roles shine. The drama doesn’t have unnecessary suspense or forced plot twists. The drama ends with a beautiful set played by the band of the five friends – makes it a pleasing experience.
The OST is simple and sweet consisting of the same old ballads which go perfectly with the drama. My favorite one will be “Confession is not flashy” by KYUHYUN.
One should definitely watch this drama if you want to see a wholesome K-drama content, it will be like a breeze of fresh air. You can expect giggles and a nice touch of emotion as you watch “Hospital Playlist”. It’s available on Netflix so add it in your binge-watch playlist.
