IU promotes Self-acceptance in her new song “Celebrity”
“Celebrity” released on 27 January 2021 is IU’s pre-release track for her upcoming 5th mini album. The song was released along with a music video and carries a valuable and wonderful message.
Lee Ji Eun known by her stage name IU made her debut in 2008 with the song “Lost Child” with the goal to unite people with her music. She has released various songs and collaborated with various artists. She has also made a name in the film industry making appearances in both movies and dramas alike.
Written by IU, the song is about acceptance and overcoming the need to satisfy society. Through her lyrics she explains that everyone is unique and none of us are made as puzzle pieces to “fit in”. She compares people’s unique differences to that of the handwriting written by one’s non-dominant hand. She uses the ideology of a celebrity to explain her feelings towards self acceptance. Look up to yourself, be your celebrity she says.
Don’t forget among the cloudy dark
You’re a star painted with a left hand
Can’t you see how beautiful
A true uniqueness can be?
You’re my celebrityIU – CELEBRITY
While talking about the process of writing the song, IU mentioned that she started out thinking about weird/eccentric friends/people but then realized on switching the song’s protagonist roles that it made sense for every one; It was everyone’s story.
Composed by Celine Svanbäck, Chloe Latimer, Jeppe London Bilsby, Lauritz Emil Christiansen, Ryan S. Jhun and IU, the song is a part of the electro pop genre featuring elements of tropical house. The song is delivered with a cheerful beat and catchy post-chorus.
The music video on the other hand gives us her perspective of what the anxiety of being a celebrity could do. She longs to be left alone but at the same time fears of being forgotten. She is seen alone and swamped by work even when she’s back home.
